Webber & Thies handles a variety of intellectual property law matters for its clients. We have experience and training in federal and state registration of copyrights, trademarks and service marks. We work with patent attorneys in Chicago and the Washington, D.C. area, and can help ensure our clients obtain the type and level of expertise needed to secure and defend federal protection for their inventions.
At our firm, the emphasis is on helping the client understand its options and developing an overall intellectual property strategy. Many clients do not understand the difference between patents, trademarks and copyrights, how and when these rights are created, or how their “property” aspects relate to their individual business models and marketing needs. Many are unaware of the simple and sometimes powerful role of state registrations. For startups, the integration of traditional forms of intellectual property with other business assets that may have intellectual property overtones, like corporate names, logos and domain names, can be the difference between a smooth and successful “launch” and an expensive failure.
We can help:
- Secure state and/or federal registration for Trademarks and Service Marks. Our services include assembling the needed components for registering your mark(s), making the application on the client’s behalf, and shepherding the application through the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office or the U. S. Patent & Trademark Office. We also assist the client in identifying any potential conflicts or adverse claims before they commit to a mark.
- Identify and secure federal registration for Copyrights. Our services include assembling the needed components for registering copyright[s], making the application on the client’s behalf, and shepherding the application through the Library of Congress’s Copyright Office.
- Refer clients to a qualified Patent attorney and work with him/her as appropriate to secure patent protection for a new invention or design.
